7 Animal Advocacy Movies to Share With Omnivores

August 6, 2026 By Maya Gottfried Leave a Comment

A great way to nurture a budding interest in compassionate living is to share your favorite animal advocacy movies. There are a lot of great reasons to go vegan; some people need a little push to fully embrace the connection between what they eat and compassion for animals.

Is your omnivore partner (or potential mate) asking questions about veganism? Is the person you adore curious about your cruelty-free philosophy? Has he or she started to eat more plant-based foods when they are around you?

Don’t have any favorites of your own? Here are some that may fit the bill. Excerpted and expanded from Vegan Love: Dating and Partnering for the Cruelty-Free Gal, with Fashion, Makeup & Wedding Tips by Maya Gottfried © 2017 Skyhorse Publishing.

Animal Advocacy Movies

A documentary that digs deep in an attempt to uncover why leading environmental organizations aren’t addressing the massive negative impact of animal farming on the planet.

Earthlings 2005 film

Earthlings (2005), directed by Shaun Monson
A stunning documentary film that looks at the suffering animals endure around the world for the sake of varied industries.

food inc.film poster

This documentary takes a close look at the ills of corporate farming, including the extensive and often hidden abuses of animals.

Forks Over Knives film poster

Forks Over Knives (2011), directed by Lee Fulkerson
Looking closely at groundbreaking research by T. Colin Campbell, PhD and Caldwell B. Esselstyn Jr., MD, this film reveals the negative impact of eating animal products on people’s health and the benefits of a plant-based diet.

The Ghosts in Our Machine film poster

The Ghosts in Our Machine (2013), directed by Liz Marshall
Liz Marshall’s film focuses on the work of photographer Jo-Anne McArthur, who travels around the world documenting the animals who have fallen victim to industry and those who have been rescued. This documentary is an account of egregious cruelty and a tribute to those who have fallen victim to it.

Vegucated film poster

Vegucated (2011), directed by Marisa Miller Wolfson
A fun, lighthearted documentary (that tackles some serious issues) about three New Yorkers trying out a vegan diet for six weeks. Writer, director, and editor Marisa Miller Wolfson presents the subject in an engaging way that won’t put viewers on the defensive.
